Character List

In order of Appearance

Wilson

  • (45) From the outset appears to be a "kinda normal" run-of-the-mill Butler in the employ of Dr Ghastly (only for a week - since Dr Ghastly's wife left him) but is anything BUT normal. As we move along it becomes more than clear that this person is losing his marbles. Very dry and "aloof". Has got to be the same height and build as Mrs Ghastly for a reason. He is in partnership with Egor.

Tina

  • (18-25) Dr Ghastly's daughter. Complete air-head. Could be considered a "woo-haa-Henry" is it wasn't for the fact she is really quite nice when not being a "rich kid". Thinks she's in love with Henry but in fact doesn't know what she wants. Certainly a candidate for the "What Ho!" or "luvie" brigade.

Dr Ghastly

  • (45-50) A very focused man. With beard, white coat and stare. As the show progresses he becomes more and more "mad" and from starting as a clean cut Doctor, he turns to a "Albert Einstein" look-a-like as more and more he looses control of his life. Prone to mood swings. Is not a evil person at heart. Is one of only 2 people who know the location of his Secret Laboratory in the Manor.

Egor

  • (30-35) At the start he seems a "dim-witted" Laboratory Assistant complete with "Hump" and an insane feel about him. Doesn't say much, until the second act. Must like chickens. Is in partnership with Wilson but Egor has other ideas...

Henry

  • (20-30) From the start a scheming, a**hole. He is always winding up people the wrong way. Is a total "rich-kid" and womaniser. Is after Penny but only because she's the only woman who has said no to him. Has a very annoying laugh. The audience has got to love to hate him. Instead of a cheer at Curtain Call, he wants to aim for at least "Boo" if not, then to be run out of town.

Penny

  • (18-25) Down-to-earth young woman. If it were not for the fact she does like men, to look at, could be thought to wear comfortable shoes a lot. Not exactly a "Plain Jane" but lacks confidence in her appearance. Also lacking a "male roll model" and so although she thinks Henry is prat she is attracted to him for the wrong reasons.

Frank

  • (18-25) A "nice, young boy" who starts off with no confidence (due to always being in Henry's shadow) but by the end he knows his worth. Has a very strange speech impediment of only getting the first 3 words out in a sentence, unless flustered, when he then blurts the rest out. Tucks his shirt in his underpants and religiously wears the "tank top" his Granny knitted for him last Christmas.

Sandra

  • (18-25) Next to Tina, this "air head" is totally in love with Smithy and spends most of the time on stage "snogging" Smithy.

Smithy

  • (18-25) See Sandra Enough said.

PC Bobby Bright

  • (25-30) The Village "Bobby". Slow but thoughtful. Takes an immediate liking to Penny. Has to be able to take a few "falls". Basic "hero" stuff. Not to be played as the usual "hard London copper".

Mrs Ghastly

  • Same height and build as Wilson. Not really a spiteful woman but she is doing things for all the wrong reasons. Loves her daughter, but feels "neglected" by her husband. One week before, left him for a "younger" man.

The Beast Of Ghastly Manor

  • Never seen, only heard. Works for chicken feed.

The Story

There's going to be a party at Ghastly Manor much to the annoyance of Dr Ghastly who is hard at work in his secret Laboratory developer a serum that could wipe world starvation from the face of the earth.

That's of course unless Wilson, the new Butler, and Egor, Dr Ghastly's new assistant doesn't steal the formula first. Wilson adds a small packet of powder into Dr Ghastly's drink but is most angry when the Doctor forgets to drink it and leaves it on the fireplace.

Dr Ghastly's wife ran off with another man only a week before hand and the stress is beginning to show on the poor Doctor. She left him and their Daughter, Tina, for someone she met "down the pub" and hasn't been seen since. Their daughter wants her father to take it easy, and spend time with her but the Doctor is far to focused on his work to realise it was his obsession that pushed his wife away, and the same may happen to his daughter.

Tina's friends arrive to a frosty reception from Wilson who is most annoyed that he and Egor can't find the Doctor's Laboratory but strangely enough Egor does know but why isn't he telling Wilson?

The guests are shown into the living room where a log fire is burning. As they take in the "ambience" they question Wilson as to why the Gates were padlocked and they had to walk up from the road.

It becomes apparent that Henry, the "rich spoilt kid" is really trying to get Penny, but Penny isn't interested in being one of his trophies and so the cat and mouse game between them starts. Outside there's a storm building and the night looks to be take a turn for the worst outside and in.

During the evening they start to doubt Wilson's explanation about the Cook and the Maid having the night off and evidence starts to point to Wilson being a murderer. But their suspicions turn elsewhere when ladies panties are found next to Wilson's clothes in the cellar. The tone of the evening then takes a more darker look. Darker still when lightening strikes and the lights are turned out.

In the Doctor's Laboratory a disaster has occurred. The power which kept control of his "creation" has now damaged his instruments and now the Beast of Ghastly Manor is loose in the grounds of the estate.

Upstairs, Sandra and Smithy are sent outside to switch on the generator in the garage which they do amid a little kiss and a cuddle but when Smithy comes outside to let Sandra "arrange herself" he is attacked by the Beast of Ghastly Manor. Sandra hears his screams and comes out to find his blood soaked jacket on the floor. As she stands there, she too is attacked by the unseen monster and she too disappears.

Back inside they hear the screams and all hell breaks loose. With the light restored they try to call the police but as they start talking to the officer, the phone goes dead. They decide to go out and look for Smith and Sandra but Henry shows his true colours of the coward he always has been. In the end Penny grabs the bull by the horns and goes out to look for her friends.

The Doctor comes out of his Lab to check everyone is all right and when he finds people are missing he is very angry, blaming Wilson for not keeping everyone in. He too goes out to help Penny look for the other two but when he returns inside he finds Wilson trying to lock the outside door to keep them out of the house.

Outside Penny can't find them, when she hears noises on the road approaching her... Closer and closer it gets and then she faints.

End of Act 1.

Inside they hear Penny's screams and Henry is loses it. He's a nervous wreck and panicking, someone is banging at the front door but he refuses to let anyone open it. Suddenly they hear the front door break down and then a few moments later the Living Room door's burst open, throwing Henry across the room. Then in comes P.c. Bright with Penny, unconscious, in his arms.

He starts to investigate the evening's activities and it seems all fingers point towards Wilson and Egor but where are they? Penny falls for the Officer straight away much to the annoyance of Henry who tries to upset things but gets put in his place a number of times.

The Doctor is interrogated and it's found out he has got a drinking problem now his wife left him. The Police Officer knows exactly what's happened... "I understand perfectly... Gin Ethically Modified Genius." The Doctor admits everything but the blame of the monster getting loose falls to Egor.

Wilson is found and interrogated but drinks the "potion" he made for the Doctor, and falling to his knees everyone believes him to be poisoned. But... Poison it is not. It's a truth drug and when questioned Wilson reveals that SHE is the Doctor's wife! She pulls off the mask and wig to show it to be true. Everyone is stunned.

Egor is found but as he walks in armed with a pistol and the out of work actor reveals everything. How he seduced the doctor's wife after hearing of the Doctor's fortune. How he let the Beast escape to cover his tracks and how he was going to kill everyone and get away with the formula and a fortune. Wilson/Mrs Ghastly runs to him but he slaps her away. He was only ever interested in the money.

After a brief fight where Egor regains control of the gun he backs up to the window behind the sofa. Lighten strikes, thunder roars, and the Beast smashes the window, dragging Egor off to his punishment. Henry loses it again and runs out the room screaming.

Order is now regained and they try to figure out what to do next. Dawn isn't that far away.

Everyone but Penny and Tina leave the room, then Henry returns. Cool calm and collected. He sends Tina out of the room and then proceeds to tell Penny the truth about the whole evening. It was a set up. The whole evening. The monster. The Police Officer and everything was a set up. All actors to impress Penny. To woo her. He was suppose to turn out to be the hero of the night, but he can't lie any more.

Penny is confused, unsure and upset. She liked the Police Officer but now he's an actor? Slowly she succumbs to Henry's charm and they kiss, just as everyone walks in including the Officer and sees them.

The penny drops and she realises she's been had over.

But then the Beast of Ghastly Manor attacks the front door and breaks in. The Officer and Dr Ghastly battle to keep it out but it's too strong. It forces them back into the Living room. Everyone then runs to the secret passage which leads down to the Doctor's Laboratory, where they will be safe if they can close the outer steel door.

The police officer is left to cover the retreat but as the group reach the Lab, they hear the screams of the Officer fade into the night.

Alone with his family the doctor (badly wounded) breaks down and admits his failure as a husband to his Wife Margery and father to this daughter Tina. "Don't cry for me Marg and Tina" he asks of them. His wife does the same and they all embrace.

Frank tries to get the steel door closed but Henry bowls him over as he runs away from the Beast.

They are now at the mercy of the Beast...

How will it end?
